Harrison Slater discusses the inspiration for NightMusic
mp3 | realaudio

Harrison Slater’s research and writings on music range from specialized scholarly works that have been called “absorbing,” “remarkable and thorough,” and “fascinating,” to prose works in fiction that have been called “poetic,” “exquisite,” and “evocative” by both serious musicians and lovers of literature alike. His scholarly research has focused on Italian music through the centuries and includes the musical culture of the Etruscans, Josquin Desprez in Milan, the seventeenth-century theorist Doni, Sammartini, Mozart’s four Milanese sojourns, Verdi operas and contemporary Italian operatic composers. Theoretical and analytical studies include Rameau’s treatise, Code de musique pratique and sketches and fragments for Mozart’s first serious opera, Mitridate.

Like Umberto Eco, a scholar who chose the murder mystery as a vehicle to introduce an educated public to the middle ages (The Name of the Rose), Slater wrote NightMusic to open the world of the eighteenth century and Mozart’s life and music to both serious scholars and new audiences. Having taught music for decades throughout the world, he believes that state-of-the-art scholarship can be combined with writings that are educational, entertaining and compelling at the same time.
